Last Update: 4/11 1:07 pm A new youth program in New Orleans that could soon help thousands of homeowners go green. EPA administrator, Lisa Jackson helped to unveil a 2-hundred thousand dollar grant program. Whether it's insulating the attic or fixing a light switch, members of Limitless Vistas are going green in New Orleans. Local geologist and creator of Limitless Vistas, Patrick Barnes started the program to get students involved in saving the environment and prepare them for the real world. Patrick Barnes says "With the green movement they have the opportunity to work in an industry that has a ramp like this that's where we want them to be at the forefront of a tremendous opportunity." Epa Administrator Lisa Jackson met with Mayor Ray Nagin and Mayor Elect Mitch Landrieu to talk about the program which consists of three 15-week training sessions. It trains students on hazardous wastes, asbestos and mold abatement. Jackson then presented Limitless Vistas with a 2-hundred thousand dollar federal grant which provides hands on experience for green jobs. Jackson says funding programs like Limitless Vistas will create a stronger and greener New Orleans. Jackson replies "It's an absolutely vital not only to the city the nation is watching to see that this city is on an upward trajectory and it's going no where but up." Student worker Sean Edwards enjoys doing his part to rebuild the community. Edwards says "When you finish the house the home owner says oh my energy bill is so much lower it's a lot of gratitude and it makes me feel good to know i've helped someone else out the more help I do the more blessing I get." Mayor Elect Mitch Landrieu responds "At the end of the day it's about these kids who not only have temporary jobs but learning whole new skills and creating a green economy that New Orleans is leading the way." Limitless Vistas plans to train 40-students over the next year. |
